Last Saturday, Jamie, Joe and I went to visit Kyrsten and see how she was doing as a new mommy. When we arrived, Westerly was sleeping soundly in her swing. This baby is so precious and so peaceful. I swear it's all the reggae music they listen to. We stayed for about an hour and she barely stirred even as we passed her around taking turns holding her.
Hugo took this pic as i proudly announced that it was our first of many pictures together. It's funny, i always wondered why my mom insisted I call women who i clearly wasn't related to growing up, 'aunt so-and-so'. Now i know b/c i am that 'aunt so-and-so' to my friends kids.
is that never in my craziest thoughts would i ever have expected to reconnect with someone i hadn't seen in 20 years! A few months ago, i received a friend request from my long lost neighbor/friend, Eddie Bird. It was such a blast from the past. Soon enough i was connected with his whole family (mom included) on Facebook.
To take things a step further i surely never thought I'd see Eddie Bird anytime soon. He moved away to Cincinnati 20 years ago and has been there ever since while my family remained on the Left Coast. To my surprise, he booked a ticket and headed west to reunite (and thaw out from the chilly Midwest weather) with Jamie, Vinnie and me.
If you were in San Francisco last weekend you can imagine Eddie's delight at the weather we had all three days. The views into the city were incredible.
No wonder he debated missing his plane on Monday morning. I would too if i knew that the dismal ice and snow awaited me. It was one of those weekends that made me even more proud to live in this city. There is nothing like seeing SF for the first time through some else's eyes.
Of course, the city has many other things to offer, like world-class cuisine, fun-filled night life and saki bombs! Eddie had never done a saki bomb, so when i found out he liked sushi it was on.
We made a giant mess but had a lot of fun. i hope this is a past time that the Birdman shares with his friends back home. One adjustment though- use taller glasses.
After sushi, we trotted/stumbled over to the Buckshot, my new favorite dive bar in the Inner Richmond. Bars with personality are a must and this one has a lot of it. Here are just two examples:
The DJ at this bar was very in-tune with their clientele playing mostly late 80's and early 90's jamz with the occassional familiar favorite thrown in (Journey, baby!). There was nothing else to do but cut a serious run.
And just like that the weekend was over just like my time as a tour guide...
There was no better way to spend my first weekend back in the states this month than with one of my oldest (as in length of time we've been friends) and dearest friends, Shannon. You only turn thirty once so we figured it should be in style...retro 50s style!
Palm Springs was the perfect place for 18 of Shannon's closest girl friends (night #1) to come together to celebrate. The following night about 30 more of her closest pals showed up for one hell of a good time. Here are just a few of the photos to prove it.
DJ Jeremy was holding it down with some ridiculous tunes.
Happy 30th Shan. This is only the beginning!
It has officially started in full-force. My friends and I are waving farewell to our 20's and embracing our thirty-something decade. Dear lord, i hope this means we will actually all get our act together. Well, not totally but i suppose this is the end of the learning curve. Time to put all those valuable lessons we learned in our twenties into mature action items.
But before we do that...time for a little merriment!
Funny how Left at Albuquerque is a hot spot for b-days and bachelorette parties (men, take note!).
Another one of Joe and Erin's friends, Hastings that always puts a smile on my face...apparently i make him constapated.
I really wish Erin and Joe lived in the city and not all the way in Davis...we have a lot of great mems in SF.
All this single ladies...well, sort of.
You too, Joe! And although it looks like i'm making out with my best friend's boyfriend's neck, i'm innocent!
Last weekend I took a road trip to LA with two of my favorite guys from college, Rick and Scotty V. The purpose was to meet my incredibly beautiful and talented friend, Shannon at The Viper Room where her band was performing for a label showcase. The show brought me to tears- i'm so proud of you, Shan. She closed out their set with this song, "Rewind".
After the show, we celebrated with about 20 of our closest friends in West Hollywood. Glad i took pictures because the night took some interesting turns.
The late twenties are a strange and wonderful time in life. About half of my friends are married (or practically married) and starting to have children. I, on the other hand travel home for the holidays unaccompanied and split my time between the parents (family #1) and friends (family #2). It's the time in life where you 'get' why you called 8 women aunt so-and-so growing up when your parents only had one sister a piece. At a certain point, the friends that you hold near and dear to your heart for years and years- who you stand next to as they get married, and love their children like they are your own become family plain and simple.
This is my second family...best friends, Shannon and Tara, husband to best friend (Tara), Lavonta and my gorgeous goddaughter, Talynn.
Tara and Lavonta are such a solid couple, incredible people and amazing parents. They aren't bad looking people either (giggle). They are considered family not because I stood next to them as they said their vows on their wedding day, or b/c I am the god-mommy of their little girl, but because i would do absolutely anything for them (Shannon too, of course), now or 20 years from now.
Uhm, could she be any cuter?!
Lavonta is such a great dad. I just can't get enough of seeing him with his baby. Too precious.
I will miss you all until I am back home in April for Tally's 1st birthday...until then, muah!
Two weekends ago, one of my best and oldest friends came to SF for a weekend o' fun. Shannon is the friend for me where all bets are off when we're together. There is constant laughter normally accompanied by bad behavior. This time was no different.
Last weekend was dedicated to celebrating a very special friend, her birthday, her wonderful man, and this carefree (almost) time in our lives. Erin has been one of those friends that you consider yourself incredibly lucky to find and keep. I met her the first day she moved into her dorm room at UOP back in 1999. We have been great friends ever since and it's amazing to think how far we've come since the good ol' days in Stockton.
Although she will be leaving the US soon to pursue her fairytale life in Madrid, I have no doubt that our bond will remain as strong as ever. Plus, I get to visit her and Jacob in one of the most beautiful places on earth.Sunday, we rose bright and early to make our way down to Los Altos for a birthday brunch with her family. I love the burbs so it was a nice change of pace. I love this photo: Jacob, Erin, me, and Kenny. Great times.
After two plus years and memories galore I bid farewell to my Six Apart family. It was bittersweet to leave behind colleagues and friends whom spent a lot of time with over the past 25 months. I have said goodbye a lot, especially over the past 5, but I am at ease knowing that the people I'm leaving behind will still remain close even though we will no longer share the office on 4th and Brannan.
I couldn't have asked for a better mid-week send-off. Thank you JDC, Chall, Kimmie, Beau Jangles, Joy, Whitaker, and Basey for lots of laughs and watermelon beer! For those who couldn't make it, you were there in spirit and definitely missed. Kimmie, thanks again for being a good sport as i 'accidentally' consumed the last of your beer.
JDC, major shout out to you and your rock star ways! You are truly one of the best friends a girl could have.
